VR enters the world of video editing

Video editing is an art that can make the most boring of material come to life. If you don’t believe this then take a look at some of the many reality TV shows that exist in the world. As Black Mirror’s creator Charlie Brooker demonstrates, video editing truly is the magic that can transform a simple story or video footage into something quite spectacular.

Now the video industry has a new addition to the process, VR video editing. Google has recently announced the release of Google VR180 Creator – available to download free for Mac and Linux.

According to TechRadar, this free software uses video from Google’s point-and-shoot VR180 cameras like the Lenovo Mirage and transforms it into a format that can be cut and tweaked using any standard video editor. After the clip has been edited, the conversion software will re-add the VR180 metadata so it’s ready to watch on a headset like the Google Daydream View.

To get a better understanding of what the future holds for VR and video editing we spoke with Vijay Koduri, an ex-Googler and Co-founder of HashCut, a popular video editing tool to edit everyday YouTube and Twitch videos, who said “To date, VR has been unapproachable to the masses, partly because of hardware and software that the common person just doesn’t have. This move by Google to make VR content compatible with everyday video editing tools is a welcome move, that will help make VR content much more mainstream.”

VR is set to be a disruptive force within many industries and it appears that video editing is no exception. Let us just hope this results in better videos, movies and a more immersive experience for video editing.
